Happy New Year

I'll be happy to be a designated driver for any of you lunkheads that really need a ride tonight and a typically have a few too many and then teeter-totter and wobble on your bike all the way home.

5 week report

ROM on the left knee is still not 100%....but improving.

The key through this point in my recovery has been improving my core. Now improving my strength and muscle balance in conjunction with endurance workouts will be my focus moving forward.

Less than 10 weeks until Mason Lake #1.

year in review

The three Kiddo's still make the world go around.

Steve Fossett asks himself what that goat is doing in the clouds?

OK so my 2008 predictions didn't exactly pull 100%.

They did in fact rename a school in honor of our soon to be 44th President.

Leogrande did get his fair review and just sentence.

Giants become giant-killers as they squeak by the then undefeated Pats (and in the end Hillary also trumped Romney politically)!

Who's gloating now (XOM - SBUX)?

Tyler's wearing the Stars & Stripes.

PruDog will make a triumphant return chasing pie primes in the NW.

Alaska Airlines has pilots filing for food stamps.

Racing - well watching others race around me - wasn't such a highlight year for me (though the team shined), but there's always next season.

Summit-the Sun Climb for Kids is still postponed, no word on when the attempt will be made - mountain is patient, legs will be there to take it on....someday.

When $20+B seems cheap...

Why didn't the Government wait until the after-Christmas sale to bail out the Big 3? And compared to $150B for AIG what's the big fuss about?

Snowpocalypse '08

First day of winter and the Pacific NW is blanketed by at least 1/2 foot of snow (if not more!).

Something is terribly wrong - Seahawks lead the Jets at halftime 7-3 - the end of the world may be near.

In fact here it is right.....now!

Return of the PruDog

Rumors floating fast & furious that PruDog & family are making a triumphant return to the Emerald (or Jet) City.

After a brief visit to the City by the Bay - apparently the pies weren't worth their fill, "Not worthy of my husbands time" said Mrs. Prudog, "Icky" said PruPup 1.0, "Too Flaky" sounded PruPuppy 2.0. "Let's go home", indicated a fed up Mr. PruDog,"I'm not subjecting my family to inferior quality when I know their are pies , more pies, and serious pies with our name on them up in the good Ol' Pacific NW."

The next family car

Porsche has never had a 4-door beyond the Cayenne SUV. So it'll be interesting to how their new sedan (and various versions - diesel, hybrid, targa, turbo, etc.) compete with the likes of the Mercedes S class, BMW 700 series, or the Maserati Quattroporto.

Is this the Pru-Dog?

The real reason Pru-Dog moved to the SFO area (or is he in Boulder?) - to become a cycling machine.

ROM

I can now get the left leg to do revolutions of the crank arm on my trainer - finally! Though still stiff & sore, I hope to get back on the trainer regularly to get my strength back up and continue to increase my ROM. Muscle atrophy is ugly!

Maybe target first of year for return to training outside.

SeaTac Survey

The other day I had a phone call asking about my commute frequency and high occupancy options to SEATAC Airport.

I think the guy thought I was fooling with him when I answered "500 or so" to his question as to "in the last year how many flights have you flown out of the airport?" I then explained that I work there, and the rest of my answers might be a little skewed as well.

So if the basic premise of this survey is to see how to improve the number of folks taking alternative transportation rather than otherwise clogging the highways with single occupancy vehicles and overloading the parking capabilities - then I think they have a long way to go.

While chatting with him on his survey questions I checked the trip planner for Sound Transit and find that from Gig Harbor it takes 3 connections and 2 hours 18 minutes (fare = $2.50) or 4 connections and another 16 minutes (fare = $1.50); and that doesn't include the time to get to and the waiting period at the park & ride lot.

In comparison I can drive myself in less than 45 minutes, on my own schedule, with direct costs* (fuel & tolls) of about $7 (with gas at $2/gallon).

I told him that recently I had taken the opportunity to commute to work by bike. Door-to-door in less than 2 hours with a direct cost* of 1 Clif Bar. That if the planners that be are considering all transportation options then they should not only increase their energy & spending on making access easier for cyclists to the airport (and elsewhere), but also provide secure parking (like Amsterdam below), and facilities for cleaning oneself up when we get there.

* direct costs do not reflect other tangibles such as car insurance, maintenence, replacement items due to normal wear & tear; which can add a significant expense (more so with the car than the bike - though brake pads, tires, tubes, lubes, chains, and periodic replacement of clothing and other items do add up when putting additonal commute miles on the bike as well).

I doubt I'll live to see anything like this in the States, but we could learn a lot from our neighbors across the pond.

Press release by Tom Green

New Press release from Alaska Airlines Seattle, WA

Cash-strapped Alaska Airlines announced a new series of fees this week that will apply to all customers not currently flying, scheduled to fly, or even thinking about flying aboard the commercial carrier. Alaska Airlines has promised never to raise its fees for not printing a boarding pass. The fees, the latest introduced by Alaska Airlines in a continuing effort to combat its financial woes, will take effect on Monday.

According to company officials, these charges will include a $25 tax on citizens traveling with any other airline, as well as a mandatory $30 surcharge for passengers who decide to just stay home for the holidays. "Tough times unfortunately mean tough measures," Alaska Airlines president Bill Ayer said. "It's never an easy decision to ask our loyal customers, as well as thousands of people chosen at random out of a telephone book, to pay a little extra, but that's just the reality of today's economic climate. We hope all Americans will understand this when receiving one of our new bills in the mail."

Ayer said that non-passengers of Alaska Airlines should expect to pay a small fee when making Greyhound bus reservations, choosing to drive to their final destination, or simply being a citizen of the United States with a valid Social Security number. Ayer went on to note that some additional charges would also apply, including a $15 fee for every piece of luggage customers have inside their bedroom closet, and a one-time payment of $40 for any American whose name is Greg, except for any Greg whose last name is Saretsky.

"We are confident that these new measures will not discourage customers from flying with Alaska Airlines," vice president Richard Cranium said. "However, we'd like to remind our customers that there is a 'discouraged-from-flying-with-Alaska-Airlines' charge if they do in fact choose not to fly with us."

Alaska Airlines, which posted a $1.45 trillion loss in the third quarter of 2008 alone (after special write-offs and expenses), claimed that the new fees—including the Taking A Shower Fee, the Knowing What An Airplane Looks Like Fee, and the Drinking Coffee From A Cup Fee—will help the company rebound. According to internal projections, the airline will recoup $500 million in the next three months alone, with nearly 80 percent of that revenue coming from citizens asleep at home."

Watching television last night cost me $250," said Ballard resident Michael Peterson, one of many citizens now forced to pay high airline costs for folding their laundry and going to the proctologist. "It's ridiculous, but what can you do? I guess that's just the price of not flying these days."

"Alaska Airlines charged me for cleaning out my attic," said 74 year-old Samantha Pratt, a Sitka resident who has not left the state since 2005. "Sure, I didn't have to wait in any long lines, or go through invasive security searches, and I got to clean out my attic, which is something I've been wanting to do for weeks, but come on now."

In response to Alaska's move, other airlines have begun offering more competitive rates. United this week unveiled a new $99 "spend the weekend quietly reading indoors" offer, while Southwest is introducing a $125 round-trip fare for those walking to their corner store for some groceries. Despite reduced offers such as these, many remain concerned over the new fees.

Some have even expressed doubt about whether they'll be able to afford to see family members they currently live with during Christmas. "It's just not worth it anymore," said Caroline Huza, an Anchorage native and mother of two. "Plus, every time I stay at home, I always get trapped next to some kid who won't stop crying."

Childish

Yesterday I posted a comment on a web board that was insensitive in regards to one of my coworkers, that affected not only him but his daughter-in-law and Son (who are also co-workers, though in a different city). It was inappropriate to do so, and although I still have strong feelings about the matter, I should have handled it in a more professional manner - and for any hurt feelings I apologize.

The old adage of engaging the brain before putting your mouth in motion (or in this case before hitting the send button) is still in effect.

Resume normal speed

Saw the doc about my knee, which is still quite sore & stiff, and he indicated that it is progressing just fine and to resume normal activity as the knee will allow. He said that a 4-6 week process back to full strength is normal, with the lower end of the scale for the young and quick recovery types and the upper end set for those of my generation.

He showed me pix taken during the surgery which show a good ACL and no wear on the bone structure for the knee; which I find very encouraging.

I subsequently then tried to get on my trainer in the garage for an easy spin and couldn't even get one revolution due to my limited ROM. I suppose I could due a lot of 1-legged drills with my right leg but then I'd be challenged by muscle imbalance. So I'll stick to focusing on doing my core exercises and getting in the pool to get some light resistance workouts in.

15 weeks until Mason Lake!

Surfer Dude

My wife was down in Cabo on layover a few years ago (2004?) and was invited by one of our surfer-dude pilots (who lives down there) to come over to his house after dinner (along with a few of the other pilots on layover there) to get together and enjoy a few drinks. Well being that she'd already had a long day and it was getting on in the evening, she just wanted to go to her room & unwind so she politely declined - something she would not normally do.

Normally she is the party!

Well surfer-dude pilot had indicated that his surfing buds Pablo, Duke & Lance were all coming over after getting cleaned up after surfing all day and it was going to be a good time - still she declined.

She learns later the next day (from the other pilots who did go), that the Lance in the surfing buds comment was the Lance of bicycling fame. She had heard Lance mentioned, but not in any context, and certainly didn't connect it would be that LANCE!

Turns out LANCE was down surfing with some of pilot surfer-dudes close friends who were responsible for instructing Lance on the finer points of surfing on recommendation by his then girlfriend (fiancee?) and now surfer-girl herself Sheryl Crow.

Now if Sheryl had been there my wife wouldn't missed the opportunity to visit with her, no matter how tired; but she still regrets missing the opportunity to meet and chat with Lance, especially out of his element - something she knows I would've hung to every word - DOH!

So it's not very surprising that as part of Astana's team training camp in the Canary Island's that they've include surfing as a part of the program.

At least he didn't blame it on the ink!

If when subjected to a doping allegation and suspension from the team - immediately adopt the Landis and/or Hamilton denial defense. I think that simple act might have this guy racing the next 2 years.

Also don't have your picture taken with vials labeled EPO, or make 274 calls to an admitted doper, and know that your "puffer"and "inhaler" are the same thing; and never, never ever, trust your soigneur!

Sheriff Buford T. Justice

"What we're dealing with here is a complete lack of respect for the law."

No he wasn't exactly Jackie Gleason but he was of the same general persuasion; and he wasn't a Sheriff but a FL State trooper. FYI Buford T. Justice was the name of a real Florida Highway Patrolman known to Burt Reynolds' father, who himself was once Chief of Police of Riviera Beach, Florida.

Picture me yesterday in the center lane and Trooper Justice in the left turn lane. My lane has the option of going straight or turning left, the lane to my right is a pure right turn lane only. My intention was to turn left and had signaled this approaching the intersection when it turned red stopping behind 2 other cars.

Well Buford (who turned out of an intersection behind me and pulls up alongside) rolls down his passenger side winda and drawls to git over to the right side of the road and cross with the pedestrian's. That I'm not allowed to be in the lane where I am and that if I don't comply he'll write me a citation. I tell him I respectfully disagree, that I'm a driver of a vehicle on the road and entitled to most of the same privileges though subject to some limitations; and that if I can flow with the flow of traffic I can be anywhere I want (this last point may or may not always be true).

He continues to point to the right and as the light turns green ask him if I can continue this discussion at the strip mall across the street; and I move over and do as I was directed. He nods and pulls away then circles into the mall parking lot and waits.

As I pull up to Trooper Justice (now standing outside his Ford Crown Victoria Interceptor) with the driver's door wide open and introduce myself. I make note of the large unsheathed knife wedged in with the baton attached in the car where his lower right leg would be next to the transmission.

The Trooper starts rattling off a string of violations that he just witnessed, that he picks up enough bodies off the road each month, and he's looking after my own safety. I tell him in every state I've ever looked up the laws that a bicycle is consider a vehicle and may do in traffic what other vehicles do so long we they operate by the same rules of the road with minor exceptions (i.e. riding as far a practicable to the right side of the road, restricted off certain portions of roadways and bridges, may ride on sidewalks in certain areas, etc.). That I can legally utilize the left turn lane, that I can avoid the right turn only lanes, and that as an adult (having been riding my bike on the roads for the last 40 years) I can look after my own safety pretty well - he's having none of this. Said he could take his vehicle code book outta his glove box and show me, but that it wasn't worth his time.

About this time he glances at my clown bike and notices that I have no reflectors or mirrors installed anywhere and makes reference to that. "That's another couple of citations I could write you up for; see how nice I'm being?" Yeah a real prince! Reflectors are for night riding you dork! Now on the mirror he might have a point.

We end up agreeing to disagree and I said that if he'd take the time to look up the bicycling specific laws for the State of FL I'd do the same. Not surprisingly he was wrong on all accounts, but it would've been a real hassle to get the citation and have to go back to FL to fight it.

So maybe next ride I have in Orlando-world I'll just carry a copy of the FL regs just in case I run across Trooper Buford or his clone. What was up with that knife?

I was also wondering what jurisdiction a State Trooper has on the local roads? I would've thought he'd only be responsible for the State Highways and Interstates. Then the County Sheriff's and local police would have jurisdictions on the local & county roads as appropriate.

But I wasn't ready to call his bluff and risk a citation - it would've only meant more hassle for me, where I would be basically considered guilty until I proved myself innocent (and probably would've paid the fine rather than fly 12 hours roundtrip to defend myself).

And as I look in the regs I can't find any reference to needing a mirror (at least in FL). They talk about seats, brakes, and lights & reflectors at night - but no mirror.

So shutup Buford!! Dumb sumbitch...

5 rides in 4 days

4 of the 5 were in the dark and in at least light rain to and from work (though I saw my first hail storm and heavy rain as well). Of the 4 rides they were all on my fixie (39x17) with newly installed SKS race blade fenders (nice!). The other (longer) ride was on my clown bike on layover in Orlando this afternoon (then I road home tonight for a double). 11+ hours total saddle time.

I seem to have the body, head and feet taken care of but still trying to work on the hands. Some of my gloves just don't seem to cut it very long in the wet, whereas my heavy mits get too warm and I get them wet from sweating inside of them.

Any wet weather glove reviews or suggestions would be most welcome.

Tomorrow (actually today) will be a day off as I need to recoup and take care of the twin kiddos as Mom and the big girl are off to the East Coast (Annapolis) for a wedding at the Naval Academy for her niece (a Navy Doc) to a Navy fly boy (and possible future Presidential candidate - just like Bush 41 and McCain).

Man on the Moon

Neil Armstrong wasn't the first American on the Moon in 1969 he was the first MAN on the Moon.

Obama has just achieved that status tonight.

Civil rights, race, gender, religious, sexual, and all other barriers and sub-categories continue to be whittled away one tiny bit at a time; though tonight was a big chunk. It won't happen in the next 4 (or 8) years. I doubt it'll even happen in my lifetime. Though I'd like to think in my children's lifetime - when people just look and deal with other people as people instead of trying to pigeon hole them into a certain class or caste.

I think Rodney King might be smiling tonight.

Postscript - 11/8
Several inquires as to my RK reference above. My thought process was to his famous quote "Why can't we all just get along." But I would also add that many millions of other folks were also smiling that day - me included.

Of the several who were not smiling (because of another result on election night) were those whose dreams of equality were vanquished by Prop. 8 in California which overturned their State Supreme Court ruling (4-3) that same sex marriage was in fact legal earlier this Summer. Now it's not. So sexual discrimination still exists! Why people care what 2 consenting adults do is beyond me?

I wonder how RK voted on Prop 8, if he voted (since as a convicted felon he is allowed to vote in CA, so long as he's not on parole)?

VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Put down or turn off the computer, get up and out the door & get to your designated pooling booth (or mail your absentee ballot) and participate in process for defining your country's future.

No assumptions either - landslide or nail-biter, change or old guard, red or blue, up or down, yes or no - if there's anything that can be learned from the elections of our recent past (nationally or locally) is that every vote really does count.

This is our democracy, don't squander your right to be heard.

Don't/won't vote = apathy = don't complain!

Battleground stakes!

Who would've thought after all these months of slings & arrows, endless debates, change this, maverick that, and zillions of dollars; it'd all come down to this - halftime at tonight's MNF?

What a better opportunity to get to see the next President-to-be make one last pitch (or is punt, pass & kick more appropriate?) and allow all you fence-sitters to get a good last impression to make an informed decision for tomorrow's election.

Both Obama and McCain will sit down (separately) with Chris Berman (that closet political analyst - take that Olberman!) to tape interviews which'll air at halftime of the Steelers-Redskins game.

So the question is - what will be the Berman issued nick-names for these two?

Floss

One of my bad habits through my first 50 years has been, at best, sporadic flossing. And I'm not alone.

With all the evidence that just a few moments getting between your teeth will do as a preventive measure is insurmountable.

I firmly believe it will help make me a stronger cyclist as well (staving of periodontal disease, plaque and bacteria means my immune system can focus on other antibodies; shortening my recovery time between long/hard workouts) so I can flash my pearly whites on the podium more often.

Team Transfers

OK for the record I'm not going anywhere. That said however if some moneybags team sets me up with a load of free team s__t (kit, bike, paid expenses, etc.) I might entertain the offer; but that ain't gonna happen. Besides, at my age, that doesn't matter as much as a good team vibe.

Which begs the question - why do so many local guys transfer from team to team every year? Some are recruited, some are kicked off their old team, some don't like the team persona, some are looking for new opportunities, some are moving up in the world, some are moving down. Some stay out of loyalty, others are looking after themselves.

As a result some teams gel - others don't. Some teams excel, others don't. Some teams have too many Chiefs and not enough Indians, some have the right blend, and some have no Chiefs and all Indians. Some teams are all about creating the race, other teams like to sit in and only react during the race.

And then it all starts over again at the end of the season.

Worst Drivers in the World

In keeping up with MSNBC's Keith Olbermann's tradition of showcasing "The Worst Person's in the World" on Countdown of which Comedian Rush Limbaugh and Fox Noise's Bill-O are frequent winners I present the award to the following:

2nd runner up - All drivers in the State of Florida in general, and the City of Orlando in particular. Specifically the driver of the white family van who cut me off at the intersection where he just had to make the right turn in front of me (as lead pedestrian in the crosswalk), while the female passenger yells at me to "watch out!"

1st runner up - Gentleman in the City of Orlando Fire Department vehicle who was in the right turn lane several cars back from the signal. As I approached the intersection in the bike lane (which was left of the right turn lane) the signal turned green & without so much as a glance or turn signal he swerved left (almost cutting across my front wheel) and continued down his merrier way.

But the Worlds Worst Driver is closer to home is the driver in the small grey bondo'd unidentifable import sputtering eastward across the Puyallup River Bridge toward Fife early Sunday morning while laying down a carpet of toxic exhaust like he was a crop duster. And due to the lack of any discernable wind created an eerie effect of a localized tunnel of smog contained within the confines of the bridge.

Bike commute

I started last week - joining many of you who're able to ride to work - doing the 35 mile (1-way) trip 4 times now. I have to get up earlier than I'm used to but once I get started it certainly is invigerating.

Late fall may not seem to be the ideal time to start such a venture, but I'm not able to get out as frequently as I wish on my days off so as to spend time with the kiddo's. So while the weather has still been mostly dry lately and I've been able to ride my race bike, with wetness fast approaching putting full fenders on the old Cannondale and making sure my rain gear is foolproof will be a top priority.

This also will not be a 100% adventure. With two 2-day trips back-to-back this weekend, I drove into work on Friday flew my flights and biked home Saturday afternoon. Then this morning I biked back to work with the plan to drive home tomorrow evening. It saves me a roundtrip in the car and gets me out for 4 hours on the bike I otherwise wouldn't have been able to; and I will try to bike commute as often as I'm able.

Which is the point of this whole thing - get my butt outside more often and increase my base miles and get a decent workout (maybe even though in some impromptu intervals here and there) without having a significant impact on my family life.

See you on the roads in the South Sound on the way to/from SeaTac Airport.

Ironman Hawaii - TODAY!

Just about this time...3 hours before sunrise on the Big Island of Hawaii on the Kona coast athletes from all over the world are getting up and topping off their tank, taking a relaxing shower while warming up their muscles, lubing up the sunblock and fighting off the butterflies prior to the cannon going off. Over 1800 will churn through the water at tiny Dig Me Beach beginning 140.2 miles of swimming (2.4 miles) biking (112 miles) and running (26.2 miles); an adventure they will collectively always remember.

Check out www.ironmanlive.com or www.insidetri.com for live coverage.

Back to work

Off for the last 5 weeks - spending some fantastic time in both Minnesota and Maui. Chasing my kids, frogs, crawdads and geckos; layering on the sunblock, getting sand where it's not supposed to be; celebrating my 1st half-century on this planet with some select folks; while managing to get in a few nice bike rides; and mostly ignoring the cell phone and the computer.

Probably my favorite memory is that of my 3 youngsters sitting on our bed near midnight in Eau Claire, Wisconsin (half way into our 10-hour 2 day drive from Chicago to northern Minnesota) transfixed by the awesome power of Mother Nature unleashing bolt after bolt of lightning from huge thunderheads. I think that may be the first time they might have realized there is something bigger than Mom & Dad (and I'm not talking religion).

So after a day at home and trying to get life somewhat normalized catching up with bills, mail, phone calls, unpacking and introducing the kiddos to their knew Nanny - I was off to Orlando at O-to-early this morning getting in late afternoon East Coast time.

After settling in at the hotel I got out & was walking down to the local Whole Paycheck Market to get some eats. Then some moron in a maroon van ran a freeway exit stop light to make a right turn in front of me when I was already 10 feet off the curb in the crosswalk. So close was he that all I had to do was reach out slightly to give his right rear quarter panel a hard hit. Well that did it! Now Mr. I'm-in-such-a-hurry wasn't.

As he's pulling over and jumping out of his vehicle I'm probably making a big mistake as I walk back toward him with the cell phone open to my ear, ready to call 911 while memorizing his license plate. As he's screaming profanities and rushing toward me I resisted the urge to be drawn into the fray. He finally calmed down enough to put together a cohesive sentence and he had the gall to ask me what the hell I think I'm doing? Me? WTF?

I tell him I'm looking at a guy who's just committed several traffic violations including almost running down a pedestrian in an crosswalk and then has the time to stop and question the issue like it's my fault? Do you even have a driver's license? I continued that I thought he'd be embarrassed about his behavior like this in front of his family, and that if he didn't turn around and get back into his car that I'd call 911 right then & there and claim that I've been assaulted by you with intent to do bodily harm. What's your story going to be?? You've got no excuse - plain daylight, no sun in your eyes, no blind spots, nothing that would have prevented you from seeing both the stop light and me in the crosswalk. Obviously you knew I was there because you stopped to come back to yell at me.

It was such a clear moment - I wasn't backing down, I knew what he looked like, what his car description was, what his license number was, and never felt so empowered (luckily the jerk didn't have a gun or some other weapon at his disposal). The bluster in this guy deflated quicker than a sidewall blowout & he after a brief glare at me (probably with disdain) he silently did a 180 and waddled back to his van and sped away.

Then I'm thinking - hey where's my apology?

Don't try this at home boys and girls. I think I just got lucky today and responded appropriately to an individual who allowed me to have my say and ultimately was receptive to what I said. That's possibly not the case with the next testosterone infused idiot who believes you better just get out of his way - or else!

The fact that you or I may be in the right when things go badly on the road (either as a pedestrian or cyclist) is of little consolation to your loved ones who are looking at you in the hospital or worse. There's been a lot written lately about confronting the angry motorist - and even after today's near altercation I would recommend being as calm, non-aggressive, and as matter-of-fact that you possibly can. Or turn the other cheek. It's hard to do when emotions are at there highest but you'll be the better person for it. Don't let the bastards get you down.

So back to work - here at the center of the blogging universe as well as my real job (which is loving my wife and the other 3 grins).

Olympics - lessons learned

Some Jamaican sprinter ought to change his first name to Lightning.

Several relay teams ought to learn to pass the baton properly - sharing is important.

Some young Kenyan Marathoner might have set the World Record (not just the Olympic Record) had he any competition pushing him (so much for tactical racing for medals); finishing just 2 minutes 6 seconds shy (5 seconds/mile) of Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie WR who himself ran the 10K instead, passing on the marathon because of the pollution threat.

What we really learned is despite the worlds attention, China will continue to oppress and suppress its people and the rights we take for granted. Hopefully for the people of China they will have tasted a difference from the influence that the Olympic tourists brought to them and light burning desire that will continue to bring about change from within. What are their leaders afraid of?

Talking legs

Not much into trash talk, and mostly let my fitness do the talking for me, though lately I've felt like a Buster Keaton movie - a silent comedy; so agreed Ian Tubbs (winner of today's Carnation LWV's series race).

100 days

Wife flew her last flight on the MD80 today as she now goes into semi-retirement awaiting a DEC 1st training date for 737 training. MD80 goes into retirement officially on AUG 24 or 25th with some special send-off by the Company on the 28th. After several thousands of hours over 17 years myself, with my wife flying the last 12 years (with a 3 year sabbatical for maternity leave), I can say that it'll always hold a special place in both our aviating memories, especially the dozen or so times we flew as crew together - so far as we know the only husband & wife combo to do so (at least at Alaska).

5 straight

On the bike for 5 straight days this week before taking today off - sleeping, chasing kids & then flying all day (though not all three at the same time).

Training rides and goofing rides at home and on layovers (LAX & SFO) with an actual RR in NORCAL which was very fun even if I didn't get to finish it. Turns out the pace was behind the schedule I needed to feel comfortable to jump back in the rental for the 1.5 hour drive back to SFO; so I dropped after 2 laps (48 miles) and went to the hotel to get cleaned up.

Also the race flyer said "The last ½ mile of Cantelowe is a steep twisty decent; use caution!! All of the roads are narrow; if you can’t stay to the right of the centerline, stay home." So I didn't stay home, but was hoping that the lead in to this descent was a long gradual climb, alas this was not the case, it was as twisty & steep as the other side - fun even though my little clown bike doesn't do to well on tough climbs since it's not very stiff (didn't help that my chain was skipping either). I'd fall of the back on the way up and chase back on - if there's one thing this bike loves it's corners.

I thought the other odd thing about this particular race was that there was no rolling enclosure OR a USAC Official following most of the races. Some fields had a moto guy following but I don't know how they made the determination who got one and who didn't? But with the rural roads and the self-officiating of the field taking care of things maybe those aren't always necessary!

So with a day off today I'll be back on the bike tomorrow in Fairbanks dodging grizzlies and moose for 6 outta 7 days - definitely ending the week with my biggest hourly and mileage totals (which I don't keep track of anymore).

$2.50/minute

Actually more than that when you add up the day - but the price just to race the Kirkland Crit this evening was pretty hefty considering I only lasted 12 minutes. If you add in the the cost of just the gas for the 2 round trips from Gig Harbor - 208 miles (7.5 gallons o'premium gas, another $30+) - plus the Narrows Bridge tolls ($5.50); the cost more than doubles.

It was supposed to be a relaxing afternoon visiting the M-I-L (who lives up the hill from downtown Kirkland) followed by the family coming down to watch the evening Crit which starts at 7:30. However just prior to 5:30 I walk down to the car to get my kit bag to get ready and discover it MIA. DOH! I left it back at home. Grab my B-I-L as a car pool partner and off we go. Make the round trip in 1:47 and to registration with 12 minutes to spare. Sign the USAC release the wife filled out, hit the can, and out I go to line up.

No warm up - I am so screwed!.

Race starts and I am in the middle of the group of 40+ racers and nearly every corner we hit I'm going backwards in the field. With a crash after the 5th or 6th lap the race splits momentarily behind me and slows slightly - phew! As I try to catch my breath and the rear group rejoins the pace again quickens and I'm once again drifting. I feel no effect of drafting the racers ahead of me - and I cannot accelerate to close any gaps, let alone on the very slight uphill section. I decide that it's not worth the effort to stay in the race and (with my sorry tail between my legs) pull out with 63 minutes remaining.

As I roll up to the family cheering section I notice that I'm wheezing like I just smoked a carton (which even as I write this I still notice), though I'm barely breaking a sweat. At my age the lack of a good warm up is a big hit to the system. I may be able to get away with it in a road race if the pace isn't too hard for the first half hour, but in a Crit where the racing is right from the get go I can't fake it. Coupled with the fact that my training is down to once or perhaps twice a week if I'm lucky; but even then I should've been able to at least hang with the main field.

So it was a still a good night to spend spectating as teamie Shawn Ongers was in the group of 6 that lapped the rest of the field, and AJ spent a lot of time & energy trying to go away solo. Teamies Chad & Alec also were DNF's. Congrats to Tubbs for the win, as Shawn took a spill in the last turn wiping out any chance for any finish line sprint drama. Not a great night to the Gin Optics boys (though Shawn took the Gear Push TT earlier in the day so not a total waste of a trip from WW).

Though I do have one sliver of satisfaction knowing that I was not responsible for any crashes or involved in any either was a definite plus, as well as not being the first guy to call it quits was a bonus as well.

I think that'll do it for '08 season, see ya all out racing next year.......

Olympic RR

Saturday's race Podium predictions:

Gold - Valverde

Silver - Contador

Bronze - Leipheimer or Bettini

Valverde & Contador will ride away from the breakaway group on the penultimate climb and Valverde will use his superior sprint to out-distance Contador. If Betinni (who mysteriously was MIA in the TdF instead choosing to ride with Boonen at Tour of Austria) is in the final mix he will use his savvy skills to take 3rd. Otherwise it'll be Levi as best of the rest. Due to the time difference it begins live at 8:30 PM PDT.

2-speeds

In Beantown after the all-nighter. Started out for a ride toward Plymouth and discovered my rear derailleur wouldn't shift from the smallest cog, so I basically was reduced to the front 2 chainrings. Approaching Quincy I ran into the gust front of a thunderstorm and did a quick U-turn and raced it back to the hotel where it's now flooding the streets and lightning up the sky. Phew!

It's hard to get angry at a naked cyclist

So the next ride is set for AUG 17th, get out and ride hard; and you Critical Mess folks might learn a thing or two.

The airport is presumed innocent

PANC is a prime example of why most communities wait a certain period after a notable personality passes on before naming a certain entity (bridge, building, airport, horse stable, etc.) in their honor. I can only hope that KSJC doesn't ever find itself in a similar predicament.

Take that!

The F word

An Alaska Airlines Executive VP has dropped the strong hint that coupled with capacity reductions for the fall schedule and for '09 that personnel reductions will be necessary and that no department or employee group will be immune. Apparently starting with a 5% percent reduction in Management starting on September 1st (how will we ever survive without them?).

Whether this is a negotiating ploy waits to be determined. The pilot contract has been open since the spring of last year and talks recently have gone nowhere as big ticket items (pay, retirement, medical, scope protections, etc.) are still in play with both sides far apart. The NMB has recently assigned a mediator to facilitate further discussions.

Our contract has several provisions to help spread out the flying to try and stave off furloughs, and discussions must be made on this specific issue. The last time furlough notices arrived to those affected was just in time for Christmas (back in the early 90's) - that was a negotiating ploy (do you think any of those guys have a lot of love or loyalty for the Company?).

The Company however remains in total control of their operation - from which routes they fly (or don't), what airplanes they order (or park), where staff is based (or closed), who gets hired, and when they need to scale back (including furloughs).

It'll cost the Company a lot of money to furlough since many folks need to be retrained for their new positions (Junior Captains downgrading to FO's, forced moves that the Company must pay, etc.) and it takes time.

It might also be more cost effective to offer an incentive for senior pilots to retire early as they make the most money, take the most vacation days, and are the ones who're generally out on sick leave most often. The Junior FO's who may be furloughed are a relative bargain and it'd be wise to try to retain them if at all possible.

So the decision to furlough is not to be taken lightly, as it is generally not for the short term. Let's hope that the right decisions are made by those competent enough to fully understand the consequences.

What me worry?

Recent conservative hysteria about gays in the military has reared its ugly head again (it must be election time!).

I am confounded about the supposed tough-as-nails straight-and-narrowly Pentagon types who're running scared of what is a personal choice sexual preference between two consenting adults. WTF?

Personally if I was in the military (pick-a-branch it doesn't matter), the thing I'd be most scared of is bullets. Now if the top brass had a ban about openly armed people being prohibited from serving in the US military, I'd be for that.

3 days straight...

...that I've been out riding a bike - possibly a new 2008 record!

Sunday I pushed the fixie up and down the hills of Gig Harbor with my eldest on back to drop her off at the YMCA. A lot easier riding without her on the way home, but I missed my "O Suzanna" singing partner.

Yesterday I had a wonderfully long 3 1/2 hour ride in America's Finest City - San Diego - with America's Finest Weather. Though maybe not America's Finest Drivers. While I was stopped at a signal near UCSD a car behind beeped at me. I was in the bike lane and turned to look at the beeper. She sorta motioned for me to move with her hand so she could make the right turn. She had her windows down (saving on the a/c) and I asked her if she was colorblind? She said no. I asked her if she was illiterate? Again she said no. Then I pointed to the "No Turn on Red" sign that was just above my head, all I got was an Oooooo. I'm still not sure if that counts as an apology for beeping at me?

Today I actually did a CR while on layover in Orlando at Lake Louisa State Park. After flying the all-nighter in from PDX this morning and getting a paultry 4 hours sleep I finished about 10th overall in the first chase as we sprinted for 7th. Not too bad for a sleep deprived old guy in the "A" group with minimal training and a bum knee racing on a clown bike.

Tomorrow l'alpe du Huez! OK I won't be actually there riding up the epic 21 switchback climb but mentally I will. I did get the chance in 2000 to ride it and (without knowing where the TdF finish actually is) I finished in just about an hour. Not amongst the great times by the pro's - the record by Pantani (tainted by...?) is 37 minutes and change - my time is more than 50% slower. But considering that it was unaided by any artificial substances, without ever previewing the course, and was on a 27# touring bike (see above pic) - I'm proud of my effort. Go Christian, you can make up some time on your rivals & combined with the ITT of your life on Saturday, you can still finish on the podium in Paris.

Elevators

Why can't the elevator techies design a keypad for floor selection where if you make a mistake and enter the wrong floor or get in behind some joker who's hit all the floors that you just punch the floor number and it deselects that floor - SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP THERE!

From Tyler Hamilton

Overheard at Tour of Qinghai Lake where Tyler now holds the overall lead - after the last two mountain stages came back together on the descent, Hamilton gambled that the same thing would happen today; "I didn't have the acceleration to go with the Iranians," he said. "They have proven that they are the strongest climbers in the race. "
The Iranians?

Liqui-dated!

Triki no more - the first one outta the TdF - is it really a surprise that it's a former lieutenant of Mr. 7 wins? Joining the ranks of Hamilton, Landis, Heras, Andreau, Vaughters, etc. Next???

Where's my referral fee?

Cruising around a showery Orlando this afternoon when I had no less than 3 inquires about my bike. One is about par for the course maybe on a crowded weekend mixed in with other bikers I'll get 2. But 3 separate inquires is good news.

First guy (white guy w/crew cut) in a H2 Hummer pulls alongside and says the typical, "what type of bike is that?" I explain as best I can in 10 words or less, he says he'd like to travel with his Trek but it's too cumbersome - so I think I've got his interest.

Second guy (older black man) is in a car who has been my shadow for about a mile (on fairly narrow, but not impassable, roads). Finally pulls alongside at an intersection STOP sign and says that he was pacing me at 26MPH for the last couple of minutes (which if true was on a flat road with a tailwind). States encouragingly that I should be racing the TdF and "doing those time trailing races." Boy what some kind words will do for one's ego, especially when I think I'm about to be passed by every slug on a bike with my current state of fitness. "I used to ride a lot when I was younger, still like bikes, but....(trailing off)" I tell him bikes speak the universal language of vitality regardless of age that everyone can relate to. He says, "I got to get me one and get my butt in shape again."

Last guy (younger black man) is on a mountain bike in the part of Orlando you probably don't want to risk being after dark. He picks it up when he sees me coming. As I pull alongside he gives me the once-over and then blurts out, "Where'd you fly in from man?" I ask what makes him think I flew in from anywhere?
And he says, "cause that's onna dose travel bikes that fold into nothin' dude, and you don't see them every day, 'specially around here. Where you from?"
ME - Seattle area.
HIM -"Where you goin?"
ME - back to the hotel.
HIM -"Where's that?"
ME - back south of Universal
HIM - "Shiii, man I gotta get me one of those, so I can be in as gooda shape as you."
ME (ego on the rise again) - Where are you off to?
HIM - "Oh I um, well ya see, I'm making a delivery (nodding at his backpack)"
ME - I see.
HIM - Ya well, if you were caught with this stuff thy'd prolly kick your ass off the team, like that Boonen guy, know what I'm saying?"
ME - Tom Boonen with the coke bust?
HIM - Ya that's the guy, he's busted for a social violation; 'course he's Dutch man and they're more liberal with that than around here - man if that was me, I'd be thrown in jail with the key thrown the other way."
ME - Unfortunately I think you're right.
HIM - Damn straight man, I gotta go, go get 'em Lance!

And I tempo the 45 minutes back to the hotel.

T. Boone

Is water the new oil?

T. Boone Pickens thinks so. Although not a new topic - T. Boone has invested to the tune of 100M (a drop in his proverbial bucket) over the years, whereas the average investor may be left holding the hose (and paying through the nose).

TdF - just like the song

With no prologue, no TTT, no time bonuses, and shorter ITT's - and hopefully no cheats; the TdF has begun with a flash.

AND perhaps just like the song by Paul Weller (played on the "take back the tour" advertisements on Verses) it IS time for a brand new start (which coincidentally, or not, was released in the fall of 1998 after the Festina marred TdF)

Yellow may be on many shoulders before it's over OR can Valverde hold on to it the entire time?

Players, Coaches, Management, etc. that used to play/work for the team formally known as the Sonics 2 OKC!

WHO CARES?

Go watch a local high school or college game if you want passion, drama, and excitement.

Now that the settlement states that the SuperSonics name stays in Seattle - my guess as to their new name is the Los Angeles Angels of Oklahoma City. OK maybe not.

Here are a few other clues:
The Oklahoma State Bird is the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. Humm the OKC Flycatchers? No.
The Oklahoma State Flower is the Mistletoe. Well maybe the OKC Mistletoes!? Not a chance.
The Oklahoma State Tree is the Redbud. Those guys are pretty tall, not too far fetched to be named after a tree; but the OKC Redbuds? No again.
Oklahoma's motto is "Labor Omnia Vincit" (Labor Conquers All Things). So my second guess would be the "OKC Laborer's" - as in all their labor bore fruit and they now have a real live NBA team (though from their record last season maybe not).

Though when all is said and done money really omnia vincit!

1st day...

...of the 2nd half of the year.

My training program has gone to the dogs (er kids) for this year so I resolve now to start my '09 training program - watch out everybody. Of course if I get my knee scoped that may slow things down a tad. But that didn't keep me from heading on out for a nice ride in this great weather - loved it.

Oh and the elbow still hurts, to the point where lifting the dang gear lever is a bother - what's the fuel penalty to leaving the gear down on a x-country flight from SEA - MCO? Well I don't have to fly until the 6th - perhaps it'll be better by then, otherwise the First Officer may have to put the handle up for me.

Back from LA

Spent the weekend down in the land of the cars and home of the stars.

Had a wedding to attend to on Saturday - eldest son of my best childhood friend got married to his sweetheart of 7 years. 1 down 2 to go. After seeing all the hoopla and other behind-the-scenes goings on, youngest son says when the time comes he'll just elope.

Sunday the 5 of us ventured on out from our Woodland Hills cottage to the "happiest place on earth". Spent more time in line getting in the frigging parking lot than waiting for any official ride. Best - Carousel. Worst - Toon Town's Roger Rabbit (too loud and scary). Saw all the main characters, with some up close & personal time with Pluto, but seeing Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pooh & Tigger was good too!

Seattle has a lot in common with Disneyland. They have Space Mountain, we have the Space Needle. They have the Matterhorn, we have Mt Rainier. They say they're the "happiest place on earth", we say we're the "most caffeinated place on earth." Lot's of similarities you probably could confuse the two - especially this weekend when the weather was in the 80's both places.

Now taking 3 kids under 3 wasn't recommended - I must say that we managed not to lose anybody (for too long) and didn't suffer any meltdowns or tantrums.

Favorite adventure - was plane ride home this afternoon as all 5 of us caught up on nap time (3 youngsters almost from the time wheels hit the wheel well after liftoff from LAX until touchdown at SEA).

Credit Cards?

Are Diners Club & Carte Blache still in existence and an acceptable form of payment?

In Lost Wages once again and in the shadows of the Wynn Resort and their sister hotel Encore (shouldn't it be named Lose?) is the tiny Somerset Motel. They still have the fading old signs for DC & CB out on the street - is that supposed to attract business?

Nostalgia anyone?

Carlin - part 2

NBC will host a fitting tribute to George by running the first episode of SNL (which was originally called NBC's Saturday Night) this Saturday June 28th. Which I'm sure will be way more funny than a 90-minute showing of a live memorial service; although with the guests commemorating George in fair fashion that might be pretty funny actually.

Since most of us missed this first episode (season?) - I was a freshman in college and doing something way more important than watching TV on Saturday nights - it'll be interesting to see how the show started. Set your DVR's and enjoy.

$3

Who checks - YES - on your IRS 1040 form where it asks "Do you want $3 of your federal tax to go to the Presidential Election Campaign Fund?"

And why?

Monday, June 23, 2008

Carlin

I'll betchya the FCC won't be allowing any derivitive of NBC to do a 90-minute show on his memorial service (even though he was the first host of SNL in '75).

So catch it here - the Seven Words you can't say on TV, and go outside and swear a good one for George you MotherF@#*ers!

Why is it always the same color?

Russert

With the end in sight for all the grief, sorrow, hoopla, insight, TV specials, magazine articles, remembrances, memorials and tributes; the overkill is finally dying down (pun intended) . Now I understand Idaho is considering trying to perpetuate the honor by renaming their famous potatoes.

PH?

Saw these encircled letters on the side of a large building on the strip in Las Vegas today (with no other obvious markings, at least on the east facing side).

I mentioned to my fellow co-workers in the van while driving to the airport,"what the ffff is that building?" They stared at me with no amusement whatsoever; as in deer in the headlights look. [If ‘h’ is behind ‘p’, ‘ph’ is pronounced ‘ff’ - so here I am again explaining my attempt at the joke once again]

Then I said, "I wonder if it's properly balanced?" Again same response.

Wonder where the humor switch is on these folks so I can turn it on?

Starbucks verses Exxon-Mobile

With a gallon of gas now about equal to a cup of foo-foo coffee I thought maybe I'd look further into which is poised to succeed in the future. [disclaimer - never take investment advice from an airline pilot]

According to the Telegraph (Britain's leading newspaper) 'Two billion cups of coffee are drunk every day around the world. Coffee is now the second most widely traded commodity, after oil, with a total estimated value of $140 billion."

So I think it's fair to compare the two side-by-side. P/E ratios typically are usually only comparable to those within the same industry - but I've listed them here anyway as they're both consumable liquids with a huge demand.

Cup O-foo-foo SB Coffee:
venti mint chocolaty chip = $4.70 (approx. $65/gallon)

Gallon O-Gas:
Nationwide - $4.078
Washington - $4.318

Top calories:
venti (20-ounce) mocha with whole milk - 3010 calories
gallon of gas - 30,000 calories

Gross Revenues:
Starbucks - $9.9 B
E-M - $404B

P/E ratio:
SB - 21.07
E-M - 11.32

Market Cap:
SB - $13.2B
E-M - $465B

Stock Price:
SB - $18.12 (52 week high $28.62 low $15.59)
E-M - $88.62 (52 week high $96.12 low $77.55)

CEO Salary:
SB - $1.2M (2.4M bonus)
E-M -1.16M (1.25M bonus)

IMHO Starbucks has great expectations for the future (as is reflected in their P/E ratio) and folks are always willing to spend extra to give them the feeling of being part of something special.
There is nothing special about a gallon of gasoline, as it will only be used to propel you a certain distance down the road (depending on your vehicle's efficiency). And nobody hangs around a self-serve gas station any longer than absolutely necessary.

Exxon-Mobile will certainly have to change its business model within the not to distant future to meet the demands and growing expectations in the energy and transportation industries.

Starbucks on the other hand, just needs to keep cranking out the good vibes and creating a feeling that we belong, AND it's good for you!

Whether too much is riding on Howard's shoulders (the SB BOD must think he's earning his salary & bonus better than Mr. Oil Tycoon) or does he let his 172,000 employees initiate some buzz remains to be seen. But in the long term how can they go wrong? Folks have been drinking coffee a lot longer than they have been consuming petroleum products - and will for a long time after the end of the dinosaur era is fully depleted.

Another blow to Levi??

The ToC has announced a marketing scheme with ASO.

What this will do to Astana and other teams and/or racers not on the cleared list or on the outs with the top French promotor, only time will tell.

One thing this will do - it will not help put the ToC on the best terms with the UCI.

But I don't even play tennis?

Right elbow to be specific - Lateral Epicondylitis is the official name. How I got it I'm not sure but it sure isn't any fun.

I also was diagnosed a few years back with a slightly torn medial meniscus in my left knee. That bothers me a little walking and a lot running - so I don't run anymore. I can tell it's there after a hard training session, especially seated tension intervals, but for the most part cycling doesn't aggravate it to the point of any notice.

Doc says the tennis elbow will go away slowly on its own - that's not the case with my left knee. If I was younger it might heal itself - but for an aging guy like myself - it's only going to get worse.

The good news is when I decide to get the knee fixed - which I was holding off on until my Summit the Sun event was over (now postponed) - I'll get back to running. Which is something that I really miss, requires a lot less to haul around or get prepared for than cycling, and can do just about anywhere.

It's a bitch getting old.

Postponed

The Summit the Sun - Climb for Kids event on Maui in September will be postponed indefinitely due to lack of time to get in proper training required. With less than 4 months until the big five-oh I just could not in good conscience try to collect donations toward my attempt, knowing how little time I've got to prepare.

With Summer rapidly approaching and the kids wanting more time in the great outdoors it would be terribly selfish of me to only focus on on this one goal.

So I say postponed - and I mean just that; I've got too much invested to give up on this completely. It would've been ideal to do this on my birthday (50 year-old climbs 50,000' in America's 50th State), but it's still an objective that I think is still possible within the year.

The good news is that I'll be able to focus a bit on attracting some more sponsors, most of which had already set their giving budget for 2008 by last fall. With the way the economy the way it is plus competition from the Beijing Olympics money is pretty tight to come by. So hopefully I'll have more luck attracting companies toward this next year.

Stay tuned.

The bird...

Not the same as the finger!

Driving to work this morning a pigeon swooped right down in front of me as I traveled north on I-5. This particular bird was doing 60+ mph fro at least a minute, which would equate to at least a mile (hey I'm not self-disclosing on my speedy driving habits) right in front of my bumper.

So I got curious - how fast do pigeons normally fly and was this an anomaly? See http://www.speedpigeon.com/ .

I also found out that specially bred pigeons race and are capable of finding their way home from a distance of over 1000 miles away flying at speed in excess of 80 mph.

So as I doubt I was drafting a racing pigeon, but my garden variety guy was probably just winging it out to the local prominent statue or freeway underpass to hang and poop with his friends.

366 days

At 1:04PM & again 2 minutes later the twins officially enjoyed ringing in their first birthday. With a full day of activities ranging from from arts & crafts with various food groups to stumbling about the driveway and lawn - everybody had a day to remember.

Little boy is walking on his own (the past 3 weeks) while younger sister still has a need for some guidance. Though I doubt for very much longer. Both enjoyed tumbling on the bed, climbing on big sisters indoor jungle gym, and trying to go in as many separate directions as possible on the lawn while only Dad was trying to contain them from dropping off the hillside or wandering up onto the culdesac.

Multiple family well wishers calling on the phone - but only the bad harmonizing of their Father and big sister actually singing to them Happy Birthday in person - they didn't appear to be very impressed. No candles were harmed in the process of today's events.

Life at the airport

Some observations:

1. A direct flight is not the same as a non-stop flight. Non-stop is self explanatory, point A to point B. Direct means the same flight number & thus usually the same airplane (though not guaranteed), and may have 1 or more stops until you get to your destination.

2. Non-stops flights usually (but not always) cost more than direct flights.

3. People that complain the loudest or demand the most have paid the lowest price for their ticket.

4. Those same people are usually not wearing their Sunday best; nor have they used a comb or brush lately.

5. No matter how wide the terminal walkway - a group traveling together will always manage to walk side-by-side obliviously negating any chance of getting to your connecting flight on time.

6. Want to have a slow walking contest - go to the airport.

7. Where's baggage claim? I swear half the herd is illiterate. It's not that complicated - unless you're the first one off the airplane - follow most of the rest of your fellow passengers. Then go outside baggage claim and light up with the rest of the illiterates in the posted no-smoking zone!

8. Unless you're flying Southworst - there's absolutely no need to que up for the boarding process at the gate with your line overflowing from the plane door (or actually the seat row where Uncle Joe is trying to shove his overpacked carry-on into the overhead bin because of the horror stories of all the lost baggage) all through the jetway and spilling into the terminal and further disrupting the flow of foot traffic.

9. Rows numbers on the planes always begin with 1, 2, 3 at the front. This is usually First Class. Last Class is in the back - mooo!

10. Seat letters always begin with "A" at the window seat on the left side of the plane (just like looking at the alphabet on the wall in your elementary school classroom); except usually now since you board facing the wrong way "A" is on your right (but that's still aircraft left).

Bonus - Free newspapers & magazines - get your leftovers at a gate from which a flight just left (prior to the cleaners coming through), or upon deplaning from the seat or seat back pockets from the folks who sat in front of you. How do you think the crew gets their reading material - thank you very much!

Island travel

Traffic to the islands is down 20+% since the failures of both ATA & Aloha.

This has resulted in a domino effect amongst the rest of the tourist related business. While airfare might be now capacity restricted and bargins hard to find - once you get here the hotels, condos and car rentals are deeply discounted. Though prices on everything else is about 20% more - that $5 foot-long at Subway is $5.99 here and the LOGP has been $4.16/gallon.

And of course since I'm off the bike all week I've seen dozens of different cyclists every day. All look serious and race ready - not the coaster type who are affected by the commercial bike ban in the NP. DOH!

Cranky in paradise

Big Girl has been a trooper lately - really trying to go with the flow, but her little body wasn't cooperating. Missed her opportunity the other night to strut her hula stuff at the shops down the block, and actually has been insisting on going to bed early (which is definitely not normal).

Doc says she has a double ear infection - and prescribed some antibiotics are on the attack to assist her recovery. She already has an appetite and a smile has reappeared, though still whisked herself off to bed early. Though she did indicate that we should go to the beach again tomorrow.

Meanwhile Little Girl has been putting on a show strutting her stuff throughout the condo and in the pool this afternoon. Dunked herself with a mis-step in the pool shallows - and came up laughing. I think I might have a lil' mermaid here. She's finally standing by herself unsupported - my guess is she should be walking within the week (twin brother has been a terror on 2 feet for about 2 weeks now and is providing much entertainment for his cousins while his sisters are in Maui with me).

So with three full days before we fly home Tuesday - I hope we'll get some girls giggling themselves silly with sand in all the wrong places, and exhausting their energies on the local playground.

Old G2K touring bike remains on the bike hook unfettered :-(

Maui music

Flying like crazy lately. Work had me to DC & back on a 2-day trip for Sunday/Monday, then immediately off to Maui with the 2 girls yesterday. Over 17 hours of long-leg flying in 3 days.

I'm missing the bike, but that's OK - I think I just need some time away to renew my season (that barely even started for me yet). We'll get some much needed beach, pool and park time.
Weather is a perfect 82 degrees with very light winds (just enough to take the edge off a pale NW'ster) with only the remote chance for any rain until after we leave next Tuesday.

Staying in Wailea's Grand Champions Villa's in a nice 2-bedroom. Big girl will be wiggling her fanny later on at the local shops where they host some music (hopefully the hula band) on Wednesday nights, she'll 'leep good tonight. maybe lil girl will join in the fun.

So no Elma or PR the next week, and the prospect of racing anytime soon is dismal at best. I'll be looking to do some trip trades but it won't be until the Enumclaw Ominuim weekend that I'll have my first crack at racing since my little Easter Crit in Ontario.

In the meantime I'll be lathering up the 50 SPF sunblock and heading out for the day then we'll all be catching some ZZZZZZZZZZZ's; Mahalo!

What's next?

Big shakeup in the airline industry continues this week as Frontier Airlines goes into bankruptcy, seeking court protection from its creditors. Last week 4 - count 'em FOUR airlines went belly up or plan to.

Honolulu based Aloha led the charge ("aloha" also means goodbye!), followed quickly by ATA (Indianapolis, Indiana), and Skybus (Columbus, Ohio).

Minnesota's Champion Air indicates it cannot compete with the price of gas at $110/barrel and will shut down at the end of May (I think it'd be fitting to shut down a week earlier on Memorial Day, but what do I know).

Meanwhile hometown airline Alaska indicates it'll take advantage of the situation and expand it's wings further into the "Aloha State" with service starting to Maui starting July 17th from Seattle and seasonal service from Anchorage starting in October 31st (Happy Halloween!).

Meanwhile Southwest led the news earlier this month with fines imposed for failure to comply with maintenance issues related to aging aircraft inspections (i.e. corrosion). Shakeup of the FAA's regional management ensued.

Then United had issues with some of its Airbus aircraft. This was followed by many carriers who operate MD80 type aircraft had schedule disruptions caused by a FAA Airworthiness Directive (AD) to adjust the spacing of wire bundle ties and taping, and repositioned wire bundle clamps. Alaska only has 9 of these aircraft remaining in its fleet, while American has more than 100. So while it was a minor issue at Alaska, Delta, Midwest, and Continental; American's whole operation was a mess - with more than 300,000 inconvenienced passengers.

Ontario GP - part 2

The camera doesn't lie - I was on the front a few times, though not off the front at any time. Little Pocket Rocket doing me proud!

I dawned on me today that there were probably over 7-800 racers in the various fields last Sunday - EASTER SUNDAY no less. No race promoter south of the Canadian border in the great Pacific NW had the guts to host a race on the WSBA, OBRA, ID or MT calendars. What's up with that?

6 months

When I think that in exactly six months I'll be up to my eyeballs wrangling a bike 5 times up the Haleakala Volcano on Maui. Not since I was in college have I felt so unprepared for such a test. But preparation is more than physical and mentally I'm there, so the physical will follow - at least I'm not over trained, and I am motivated. I hope to look & feel like one of my favorite photos (taken 8 years ago near the top of L'Alpe D'Huez, 27# touring bike no less!). I only wish I had the yellow jersey to go with the yellow helmet.

New web site should be up & running before the end of the month. Looks pretty slick - I hope to live up to the hype. Attracting corporate sponsors has been a challenge, no bites yet; but I will be happy if individual donors come on board. I will make it very EZ for them to do so, as you will witness shortly.

I've been a bit dismayed lately as well to learn that one of my favorite rides, up Hurricane Ridge, may be off limits (not only for my training) but for all cyclists for up to 2 years while they do repairs to the road. To read more reference(http://www.bicyclealliance.org/#HurricaneRidge) and lodge your protests to the appropriate parties.
